Our Mission
The mission of Independent Living Resource Center, Inc. (ILRC) is to empower
people with disabilities to lead independent lives by providing advocacy,
community education and direct services.
ILRC is a consumer-focused, consumer-directed
organization. Over half of the ILRC Board of Directors and
staff have disabilities and they are committed to assisting
others in choosing and achieving a desired level of independence
in their daily lives.
Consumers, board members and all ILRC employees
work to improve the availability of affordable, accessible
housing and transportation for people with disabilities, increase
the accessibility of the community, and advocate for supports
that assist people with disabilities to remain in the home
setting of their choice.
Independent Living Resource Center is a non-profit agency.
Sources of funding include:
SRS Health Care Policy – Traditional IL Services grant
Sedgwick County Physical Disability Mill Levy
SRS-HCBS Waiver service fees
Donations and other fundraising activities
ILRC is a member of the:
• National Centers for Independent Living (NCIL)
• State Independent Living Centers of Kansas (SILCK)
• Kansas Association of Centers for Independent Living (KACIL)
History
From its inception in 1984, Independent Living Resource Center, Inc. (ILRC)
has actively worked to address the needs of individuals with disabilities who
live in South-Central Kansas.
For over 20 years, ILRC has been assisting
people with disabilities live more independent lives. From
the early 1980's to today, there have been major legislative
changes and protections put in place to protect the civil rights
and liberties of individuals with disabilities.
ILRC has grown from a three-person office to
its present size, which includes over 30 in-house staff. ILRC
also provides payroll services to several hundred employees
who provide in-home, non-medical attendant services to consumers
with disabilities.
The number of individuals served per year has
grown from a few dozen to over 3,000 individuals and families.
The services provided by ILRC are always individualized to
meet the consumer's needs' and are based on consumer choice
and empowerment.
