Program Purpose/Structure
The purpose is to teach children with disabilities how to ride a conventional bicycle without training wheels. 40 campers are instructed for approximately 1 hour each day.

About Lose The Training Wheels Program
Children with disabilities such as autism, MRDD and cerebral palsy are taught how to ride and transition to a conventional bike within a 5-day period. The program utilizes adapted bikes and techniques developed by Dr. Richard Klein, a retired professor of mechanical engineering from the University of Illinois.

Program Success Rate
There is an approximate 80 percent success rate of camp participants that are able to independently ride a two-wheeled bicycle by the end of the week.

Most children enrolling are those capable of riding a bicycle with training wheels. However, it may be with some difficulty or hesitation. Children that have benefited most from the program are those that have use of all limbs, have adequate vision to see and avoid obstacles and, above all, the desire to “lose the training wheels.”

The Need & Benefits
This is a great opportunity to improve the quality of life for children with disabilities.

Benefits from independent bike riding include self-esteem, peer inclusion, improved health, improved exercise opportunities, increased stamina, increased cognitive stimulation and decision making, and an opportunity for the entire family to participate in a fun activity as a family group. The closest Lose The Training Wheels camps are in Houston and Chicago.

Finding Resources in the Midwest

Fifteen years ago when I became a paraplegic the Abilities Exposition was very helpful with many of the everyday living items I was interested in (wheelchairs, accessories, bath assistance, etc.). It was held in St. Louis, thus serving the center of the country. But in recent years it has become so expensive for vendors that it now has evolved into an expo of big ticket items (RVs, vans, power chairs, etc) and no longer puts on a show in the central part of the nation.

The Midwest Health & Abilities Expo is changing that by offering very affordable vendor booths, emphasis on everyday living items and located centrally in Wichita, KS. Last year we moved into the convention center, had over 100 vendors, and drew over 1,100 potential customers. I have visions of this becoming the premier exposition for the everyday needs of those with various disabilities.

— Dr. Dan Caliendo MD (T-10 paraplegic)

Exhibitor Testimonials

Hart has been a sponsor of ILRC’s Health & Abilities event for four years because we feel strongly there is a need to provide such an informational health resources forum. It has been very exciting to see the event grow to this level in such a short time. Every year the event has proven to be a successful outreach effort. There is no other health event that targets the market for our services as well as this resource fair. This year, we had a steady flow of visitors, which has resulted in nearly $10,000 in accounted sales of mobility equipment.
— Sharon Schneider of Hart Pharmacy & Home Medical Equipment

The Midwest Health and Abilities show was great for us. We received several new customers at the show and were able to visit with many quality leads. Almost everyone through the show was a qualified potential customer.
— Matt Graham of Home Buddy LLC

I think the thing that surprised me the most is that I handed out applications for five of the six Talking Book Service Centers in the state. The application requests covered inquiries for people from Garden City to Leavenworth. As an organization it is nice to find a statewide forum for our service...This wasn’t a “grab the freebies” and move on to the next booth expo. You did a great job of attracting people who were seriously interested in the vendor services.

— Brad Reha of Kansas Talking Books
